Senate Resolution 50

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS OF COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOR WINNING STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE SAME YEAR.

WHEREAS, the men's and women's basketball teams of Copiah-Lincoln Community College both captured the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges state championships on February 23, 1999; and

WHEREAS, this is the first time in the college's history for both teams to win state championships in the same year, which is indeed a rarity at any school in the nation; and

WHEREAS, Coach Gwyn Young of the Lady Wolves and Coach Dennis Sims of the Wolves have both provided exemplified leadership during the year; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Wolves finished the regular season at 18-6, won the MACJC South Division Championship with a 21-6 record, and went undefeated in the overall state tournament to post a 23-6 record and capture the state crown; and

WHEREAS, the Wolves finished first place in the South Division with a 20-4 record, won the South Division Championship with a 22-4 record, and went undefeated in the overall state tournament to post a 24-4 record and capture the state crown; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this singular achievement by these two championship teams and their coaches, who have brought honor to their school, their counties and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the men's and women's basketball teams of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, both of which captured the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges state championships on February 23, 1999, and their coaches and volunteer assistant coaches, and wish them continued success in their athletic and academic endeavors and in their future careers.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Coach Gwyn Young and Coach Dennis Sims on behalf of the teams, and be made available to President Howell Garner, Co-Lin Community College and to the Capitol Press Corps.
